AADK Urges Action Against Workplace Drug Abuse

The National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA or AADK) has issued a strong call to action last Thursday, 23 January, urging employers in Malaysia to take decisive steps to combat drug and substance abuse in the workplace.

As AADK Sarawak Director Abdul Hamediee Ibrahim stated, "This matter needs to be taken seriously and appropriate interventions need to be implemented by employers to help address the problem of drug and substance abuse in the workplace."

This came in light of a recent drug test conducted by AADK that revealed 51 positive cases among 5,280 employees from 169 government departments and government linked companies, highlighting the need for proactive measures.

One of the key initiatives in this effort is AADK’s Drug-Free Workplace (TEKAD) program, which empowers employers with knowledge and resources to combat workplace substance abuse effectively.

The Impact of Workplace Drug Abuse

Workplace drug abuse can have far-reaching consequences for businesses, employees, and communities.

  1. Safety risks: Employees under the influence are more prone to accidents, endangering themselves and others. High-risk industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy sectors are particularly vulnerable.
  2. Reduced productivity: Drug abuse leads to absenteeism, impaired focus, and decreased efficiency, affecting overall business performance.
  3. Financial and reputational damage: Workplace incidents linked to drug use can result in costly legal actions and harm to an organisation’s reputation.

Employers must take proactive measures to address these risks, creating safer and more productive workplaces.

AADK’s TEKAD Program

Program Tempat Kerja Bebas Dadah (TEKAD), introduced by AADK, is a comprehensive initiative designed to ensure workplaces are free from drug abuse. The program’s goals and objectives are outlined below:

Goals

  • To enable public and private sector employers across industries, including security, manufacturing, service, public, and agronomic sectors, to implement workplace drug-free initiatives.

Objectives

  • Educate employers and employees about the dangers of drug abuse.
  • Provide intervention programs for employees struggling with substance abuse.
  • Raise awareness about drug prevention and equip employers to handle substance abuse issues.
  • Support the implementation of effective rehabilitation programs.
  • Prevent workplace drug abuse and create a safe, healthy environment.

Target groups

  • Public and private sector employers.
  • Anti-Drugs Committees at workplaces.
  • Public and private sector workers.

Impact

Employees gain awareness of the importance of a drug-free workplace and access to rehabilitation services offered by NADA. This initiative also equips employers with the skills and resources needed to sustain a drug-free environment.

Steps Employers Can Take to Combat Workplace Drug Abuse

Employers in Malaysia can adopt the following measures to address drug abuse effectively:

Develop a workplace policy:

Conduct drug and alcohol testing:

  • Use reliable testing methods such as drug testing kits for illicit drugs and breathalyzers for alcohol.
  • Implement random or periodic testing to deter substance abuse.

Leverage training and awareness programs:

  • Educate employees on the dangers of drug abuse through workshops and campaigns.
  • Train supervisors to identify and manage cases of substance abuse effectively.

Provide rehabilitation support:

  • Partner with NADA or other organisations to offer treatment and rehabilitation services.
